Since Medicare and Medicaid do not cover retirees living out of the U.S., private insurance is advised, so that treatment in private hospitals - generally of higher quality than public - can be accessed. Most expats live in the main cities of Santo Domingo and Santiago, with many in the popular tourist towns as well.
